Current Social and Rangeland Access Trends among Pastoralists in the Western Algerian Steppe

In the western Algerian steppe, public authorities have carried out actions aimed at rural development (agricultural programs) and combating desertification (grazing reserves) to counter significant rapid loss of vegetation cover pastures by overgrazing, consequent impacts on local livelihoods. This research aims characterize how such are affecting pastoralists what their perceptions about them. A selective sampling 150 agropastoral households was interviewing heads, analyzing socioeconomic, government perception variables. Most agropastoralists access under tribal tenure, conditioned social structures. Pastures prevailingly perceived as insufficient, grazing reserves is largely negative. Pastoralists worried degradation declining lands, looking for solutions alternatives. However, state interventions been uncoordinated not considered customary rights. The generalized awareness environmental deterioration points need better communication intervention strategies be developed future that involve inhabitants lands.
